Has James Bond’s lifestyle caught up with him? He’s smoking and drinking too much and is out of shape.
After one too many hangovers, M orders Bond to Shrublands. Is that the name of a villain’s headquarters? Not quite. Shrublands is a health farm and calls itself ‘the gateway to health’. To Bond, however, it’s more like the gateway to hell as he faces strict dieting and complete rest for ‘over indulging’.
Jason Isaacs Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films) is an ideal reader for this audiobook version of Thunderball.
He delivers a light touch to the beginning of the novel. And his timing is excellent and effective during the underwater fight scenes – ‘his hand moving with terrifying slowness through the water’...
Isaacs’ voice is slightly gruffer too, as he portrays our flawed hero, James Bond. (Bond even gets stroppy at one point!).
With the novel’s many colourful characters, Isaacs wonderfully increases the atmosphere of Thunderball – especially as the plot of terrorists stealing nuclear weapons is still a relevant threat today.
There’s good living, action, humour, a world held to ransom, a race against time, an exotic location and a gutsy Bond girl with Domino.
Jason Isaacs ratchets up the tension as the novel reaches its climax and makes this Thunderball audiobook a thoroughly enjoyable and exciting listen.
Listen out for:
- two enemies for the price of one: Blofeld and Emilio Largo
- Fleming’s light-hearted while Bond’s at Shrublands
- The appearances of Ernst Stavro Blofeld and SPECTRE (The Special Executive for Counter-intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion)
- Bond’s genuine concern for Domino
- the return of Felix Leiter
Thunderball is the ninth James Bond title by Ian Fleming.
