With Richard the Lion Heart as your brother and your mother interfering with your sovereignty (well actually stealing it) until your brother comes back from the Crusades, if you’re King John you certainly have a lot to contend with and the united opposition of Austria, Brittany, France and the Pope is the last thing you want - but you’ve got it.
King John is left to face these troubles alone with only his domineering mother and Faulconbridge, the illegitimate son of Richard the First, for company. As the King becomes increasingly paranoid, alliances are promised, broken and remade.
With successful roles in Silent Witness and Holby City, Michael Feast takes on the role of King John in this production, from award-winning producers Arkangel. Eileen Atkins, famous for her work both on stage and screen, plays the role of Constance while Bill Nighy, notable for his parts in films such as Love Actually and Pirates of the Caribbean, plays the part of Cardinal Pandulph.
This full cast dramatization is brought to you as part of The Arkangel project to record the collected works of William Shakespeare – a project that has won them many awards (including the 2004 Audie Awards) and uses the talents of The Royal Shakespeare Company to bring these works to life for the new millennium.
