Along with Pericles, The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest, Cymbeline sits amongst the group of romance dramas written toward the end of William Shakespeare’s incredible career.
Imogen is the daughter of King Cymbeline, who suffers under the cruel wrath of her wicked stepmother. Her love for Posthumus, who has been raised in her the court of her father, has led the pair to marry in secret. However, the King soon catches wind of their affair and banishes Posthumus away.
Disguised as a boy, the daring young Imogen sets out to find her husband, encountering two innocent young brothers along the way. There is something familiar about the two men, it seems; something that likens them to Imogen’s own father. Meanwhile, Posthumus is cruelly tricked into believing that Imogen is unfaithful to him by the wicked Iachimo. As events begin to spiral beyond control, this tumultuous, dark tale thunders towards its captivating conclusion.
