What is the BBB?
The Better Business Bureau is a nonprofit organization that serve as intermediaries between businesses and consumers. Their mission is to 'be the leader in marketplace trust,' and they do this by:
- Setting standards for marketplace trust
- Encouraging and supporting best practices by engaging with and educating consumers and businesses
- Celebrating marketplace role models
- Calling out and addressing substandard marketplace behavior
- Creating a community of trustworthy businesses and charities
But if there's any one thing the BBB is best known for, it's for their role as mediator for public complaints. So anytime they receive negative reviews about one of their member businesses, an investigation is initiated by the local chapter to determine the validity of this complaint, as well as to recommend any appropriate actions as needed.
What does BBB accreditation mean?
In a word: trust. Which means everything to us. Largely because we now live in a world where even credible review sites can be full of fake or paid submissions that try to sway customers into trusting a business. And while it may work sometimes, a lot of today's consumers have caught on to these practices and are increasingly skeptical about most things they read online.
But what the BBB is hoping to do with their accreditation program is to take that suspicion out of vetting a business by assuring consumers that their conduct is ethical and that their dealings are honest. One way the BBB keeps their members accountable to this promise is by assigning letter grades that correspond to their record in customer service - an 'A' for the best and, of course, an 'F' is never good to have.
