Murray Gold's new play starts from the suitably Kafkaesque premise that Franz Kafka finds he has to play himself in a musical about his own life. The play - or is it the musical? - introduces Kafka and the audience to some of the key characters in his life, Milena Jesenska, Dora Diamant and Felice Bauer. David Tennant stars as Kafka, in a performance that won him a "Best Actor" award at the BBC Audio Drama Awards. Music by Murray Gold. Directed by Jeremy Mortimer.

Review By Rachael - This is really quite good. It feels very labyrinthine and appropriately Kafkaesque, basically a highlights tour of moments from Kafka's life retold as they would be in a Kafka story. There are mentions of several Kafka stories, starting with the Metamorphosis most explicitly, but the overall feel of the piece was the most reminiscent of The Trial for me. I'd recommend reading that if you aren't familiar with any or much of Kafka's work before giving this a listen, if you want to get the most out of the play, but I think there is enough here to be enjoyable without it and with little to no knowledge of Kafka. There is another story, a non-Kafka story, that popped into my head a few times while listening to this, but I don't think I could mention even the author, let alone the title of the story, without giving away a bit of a spoiler to anyone familiar with it.
The acting is of course fantastic. I say of course because David Tennant plays Kafka and won last year's Best Actor BBC Audio Drama award for the role. (Posted on March 24, 2013)
