During the Second World War Carrie and her brother become evacuees, sent to live in a tiny coal-mining town in South Wales. They are taken in by the kindly Miss Evans and her stern shopkeeper brother, who rules over the household with a rod of iron. Carrie and Nick also discover Druid’s Bottom, the house where their fellow evacuee Albert Sandwich lives with Hepzibah Green.
It’s from Hepzibah that the children learn the legend of the African slave boy’s skull which sits in the library. If ever the skull is removed, it is said, an ancient curse on the house will be revived. Albert says it’s nonsense, but who can really be sure – and would anyone dare put it to the test?
When Carrie leaves Druid’s Bottom she takes a terrible secret with her. Only on her return, some thirty years later, does she reveal the awful thing she once did and discover what really happened next.
