In James’ new world, 1995 became known as ‘Year Omega;’ the year women stopped being able to reproduce. In 2021, where we meet Theodore Faron, England is one of the few civilized places left on Earth, governed by the Warden, Xan, who rules with an iron fist over his country. Rebels fight against Xan’s extreme laws of capital punishment and involuntary euthanasia and Faron’s life becomes incredibly complicated when he meets and falls in love with one of them. From that point on, we join Faron on a roller-coaster ride as he uncovers the truth about the dwindling society he lives in.
The Children of Men is a break from James’ norm, although there are references to the other stories in her canon, but it still remains a very engaging and entertaining read. Julian Glover narrates this MP3 Audiobook, with his usual clipped and economic delivery, expertly conveying a world where hope is gradually running out.
