Treasure Island (BBC Radio Version)

Long before Jack Sparrow swashed his buckle, Long John Silver and the crew of the Hispaniola were thrilling readers in this classic tale of skulduggery, piracy and adventure. The hero of the piece is young Jim Hawkins, who outwits a band of cut-throats and pirates to obtain a treasure map, disclosing where the bloodthirsty Captain Flint hid his treasure. Setting sail on the Hispaniola, Jim quickly discovers that there is more to the crew than meets the eye.

This classic tale of adventure on the high seas is brought to life by the BBC Radio cast, featuring Jack Shepherd as Long John Silver and James McPherson as Jim. Shepherd creates a Silver that is both likable and sinister without ever veering into the realms of caricature, whilst McPherson’s Hawkins perfectly captures the innocence and headstrong qualities of a young man striking out on his own.

Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale is the template for practically every pirate story to follow. It is peppered with colorful characters, scurvy dogs and double-dealing bilge-rats. However, it is also a wonderfully detailed picture of life in times when pirates were very real and to have dealing with them was a genuinely dangerous business.
