Torchwood – The Dead Line
One of four BBC radio dramatizations of Torchwood broadcast prior to the third series of the hit television show, The Dead Line works equally well on its own and also as a wider part of the Torchwood mythos.
If you’ve ever proclaimed that you’re sick to death of cold calls from double-glazing salesmen, The Dead Line might put your situation into a little perspective. All it takes is a single phone call from a mysterious number that apparently hasn’t been active in 30 years, and suddenly Cardiff’s residents are flat on their back in a coma, seemingly unreachable. When Jack himself falls under the spell and into a trance, Ianto reveals some soul-searching home truths at his hospital bedside.
It’s a frantically paced radio drama of the highest calibre, with moments of real tenderness and character development amidst the chaos. Written by Phil Ford, a veteran of TV’s The Sarah Jane Adventures and The New Captain Scarlet, The Dead Line is helmed masterfully by Kate McCall. With voice talent provided by the original cast of the television series, this is a worthy addition to the ever-expanding multi-platform Torchwood legend. Dona Croll puts in a solid performance as Stella, an old friend of Captain Jack who may just hold the key to unlocking what exactly is going on.
