The BBC’s series of Torchwood audio books offer a great opportunity for fans of the television series to get a little bit more of their favorite characters, and usually feature gripping stand alone story lines in their own right. This one by prolific horror/fantasy writer Steven Savile is no different, and for an added bonus it’s read by Naoko Mori who played Toshiko Sato in the TV series. It’s definitely one that those who loved early Torchwood will enjoy, as it’s set during the first series and features all of the original characters.

As usual, there have been a number of mysterious unexplained and unconnected deaths that the team must decipher. But when the finger of homicidal blame falls on a Torchwood member (none other than Captain Jack Harkness), it’s clear that this is anything but another day at the office. Could he really be the culprit, and if so what would his motive be?

Throw in an ancient secret society and more than the odd gory moment, and you’ve got a classic Torchwood story from what many fans see as the golden era of the series. Toshiko Sato’s voice narration works a treat, as does her surprisingly good impression of Captain Jack’s American twang. Be warned: this adaptation does contain strong language and adult themes and may not be suitable for younger listeners.
