Torchwood – The Men Who Sold The World
One of the great things about tie-in novelizations is that they can give the reader a chance to get better acquainted with characters whose histories and motivations might otherwise be shrouded in mystery. In the case of The Men Who Sold The World, it’s an opportunity to explore the background of CIA operative Rex Matheson, prior to his introduction to the Torchwood in the fourth television series (Torchwood: Miracle Day).
It’s also a gripping spy thriller set within the reassuringly weird and fantastic Torchwood universe. When some of the CIA’s elite forces inexplicably hijack the consignment of alien technology they were supposed to be guarding, something is clearly up, and it’s up to Rex to find out what it is and put a stop to it. But as you can imagine, doing so is going to be far from straightforward.
This unabridged reading of Guy Adams’ novel by actor John Telfer also enables curious fans to get better acquainted with Esther, and to get under the skin of the relationship between her and Rex. All in all, it’s a welcome addition to the Torchwood universe that will please fans new and old, and helps to bridge the gap between the ‘classic’ series’ and Miracle Day. However, be advised that this adaptation does contain strong language, sexual references and graphic scenes of violence and may not be suitable for younger listeners.
