Set during the 1930s, ‘Zorba the Greek’ is one of the major philosophical novels of the twentieth century. The narrator, a young Greek academic, travels to Crete to claim an inheritance and set up a lignite mine. He forms a deep friendship with Zorba, an elderly man he employs as his foreman. Zorba’s zest for life and desire to experience all it has to offer is contrasted with the quieter attitudes of his young friend in a series of powerful and involving events which challenge the attitudes of both of them.
