The whole Torchwood team are here in this abridged reading of Andy Lanes’ Slow Decay novel. As you’d expect from a story featuring Captain Jack Harkness and his band of alien hunters, it’s a tense adventure from start to finish, with more than the odd lashing of the strange and mysterious. As with many of the other BBC audio books that accompany the popular TV series, this one’s ably read by a member of the cast – Burn Gorman, better known as his character Owen Harper.
There’s a strong focus in Slow Decay on how the alien technology that Torchwood seeks to keep under wraps can be misused with disastrous results, and for Gwen this point strikes a little too close to home. Five young men lay dead after a fight in a club, and pretty soon even more bodies are starting to turn up. Is there a connection, and who could’ve possibly found a Weevil appetising? As the team investigate, we also get a much more intimate look at Gwen’s home life with Rhys.
Certainly not for the faint of heart, this is one Torchwood title that pulls no punches, and isn’t afraid to peer into the murkier depths of human, and alien, nature. Genuinely creepy and thoroughly chilling, this is Torchwood at its pitch-dark best.
