Featuring all of the original main characters – Jack, Gwen, Ianto, Toshiko and Owen – Another Life is set after the first globally acclaimed Torchwood series. This unabridged audio version of Peter Anghelides’ story is read by none other than John ‘Captain Jack’ Barrowman himself, and his characteristically dry American drawl suits the subject matter well.
It’s a stormy story of murder, cannibalism, alien technology and everything else you’d expect from classic Torchwood. The team must discover who is behind a series of grotesque crimes against the city’s homeless, the whereabouts of some missing nuclear fuel, and the reason for just why it’s raining so much more than normal.
The main thrust of the plot has an almost Invasion of the Body Snatchers ring to it, which will no doubt please fans of classic science fiction as much as avid followers of the TV series. Doctor Who fanatics will also undoubtedly recognise the Blaiid Drwg nuclear plant that features heavily as a setting in this story as the one that appeared during the ninth Doctor’s visit to Cardiff with a certain Jack Harkness.
It’s all told compellingly by Barrowman, and the narrative manages to squeeze in a few amusing sub-plots to go with the heart-pounding tale of alien deception and intrigue.
