The character of Sarah Jane Smith is one of the most enduring and endearing in BBC history. Beautifully portrayed by Elizabeth Sladen, she found her place in the public’s affection over 40 years ago as the companion to a certain Tardis-dwelling Time Lord. Since then she has achieved her own TV series, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and a number of CD audiobook releases.
The Time Capsule starts off domestically enough. Sarah Jane’s doing her shopping in the local supermarket and it seems like just another normal day. But as fans will know, nothing is ever ‘just another normal day’ in Sarah Jane’s world, and when aliens start popping out of the freezer section, Sarah Jane must do all she can to prevent the grocery-grown ghouls from wreaking destruction…
It’s the inventiveness of the scriptwriter that makes this MP3 audiobook such a delight to listen to. Where else would you find a clanking alien created from pots and pans? However, it’s not a comedy and Elizabeth Sladen plays the gravity of the situation, communicating it as a real threat that must be stopped whatever the cost.
Sladen’s skills as a narrator are equal to her talent as an actress; every character is invested in and she is careful to pick up the pace whenever the script demands. Just on the right side of scary, this CD audiobook will be a treat for any young sci fi fan.
