Investigative journalist, Rhoda Gradwyn arrives at the private clinic of Chandler Powell to have cosmetic surgery – a week later she is dead. Adam Dalgleish is called in to investigate the murder and he soon gets caught up in family secrets and witchcraft with connections between the past and present coming to light.
This is another gripping P.D. James book and is cleverly portrayed by the cast headed by Richard Derrington as Commander Dalgliesh. I found the references to the seventeenth century, where a witch had been burned in a stone circle and the eventual connection to the present, interesting and intriguing and, although this book is more low key than some of her pervious novels, she treats us to a more gentle and understated approach which I found as a pleasant change. I would give this 4 out of 5 stars. (Posted on 20 May 2013)
