The first charming Caxley tale introduces the deep-rooted camaraderie between Septimus Howard, a calm and controlled man, and Bender North, a confident, successful but gruff ironmonger. Their argumentative sides often clash, displaying moments of fury and forgiveness with wonderful tenderness. Theirs is a friendship that survives misunderstandings, the tragedy of war, and the bitterness of loss. The story of their families continues through the generations.

Miss. Read is the pseudonym for Dora Jessie Saint who started her professional career as a teacher. She soon found a fondness for literature and before her recent death; she was made an MBE for her work as an author. Saint also worked for the BBC as a scriptwriter and country matters were always a focal point in her stories. The Market Square is one of only two stories that are set in the country village of Caxley, just a few miles down the road of Fairacre where 20 of Saint’s most famous stories are set.

This story follows the lives of two families in Caxley namely the Howards and the Norths. Septimus Howard is a prime example of a man in control who is generally calm and pleasant unless riled up, while Bender North is successful and self-assured but has a penchant for an argument. Their personalities often clash like butting stags but their friendship remains undeterred as they and their families experience generations of love, loss and war.

This CD audiobook is read by British actress June Barrie and it is also available on an equally enthralling MP3 audiobook. Join the goings on in The Market Square and get sucked into country life with tales from the Howards and the Norths.
