The first instalment of Tolkien's epic tale, adapted from the original BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation. With his uncle, Bilbo Baggins, having mysteriously disappeared, Frodo finds himself in possession of a simple gold ring that has great and evil power. It is the Ruling Ring, taken long ago from the Dark Lord, Sauron, who now seeks to possess it again. Frodo must do everything he can to prevent this, and with the help of Gandalf the wizard and a band of loyal companions he begins a perilous journey across Middle-earth. Sauron's Black Riders are on their trail as they travel to Rivendell, attempt to cross the snow-swept Misty Mountains and, in desperation, enter the terrifying Mines of Moria. Widely regarded as a broadcasting classic, the BBC Radio dramatisation of 'The Lord of the Rings' stars Ian Holm, Michael Hordern, Robert Stephens, John Le Mesurier and Peter Woodthorpe.

Customer Reviews

The first part of JRR Tolkien’s epic masterpiece makes a seamless transition from the written word to audio drama. What begins as the whimsical tale of Bilbo Baggins’ eleventy-first birthday soon gives way to the much darker adventures of his nephew, Frodo and his journey to destroy the One Ring.

For those who mourned some of the inaccuracies of the film, this adaptation is much closer to the original text, reintroducing some of the lesser characters such as the haunting menace of the Barrow Wights. Ian Holm, who starred in the movie as Bilbo, now uses his vocal skills to disarmingly chart Frodo’s progression from naïve young hobbit to the world-weary and corrupted character that made the books so intriguing. Also lending their talents are great British stalwarts such as Michael Hordern as Gandalf and Robert Stephens as the dark and enigmatic Aragorn.

To create the magic and mystery of Middle Earth, Stephen Oliver’s score acts as a beautiful and strangely lyrical backdrop to the first chapter of the trials of the Fellowship of the Ring. Whether you’ve read the books 100 times or are new to Tolkien’s world, this audio adaptation is the perfect place to begin your love affair with one of the finest literary works in history.
