Eight children once carved their names on the trunk of the great copper beech which shaded the schoolhouse in Shancarrig. Now those children are grown. For each one, Shancarrig holds special memories - some too private ever to be told. From Ryan’s Hotel to Barna Woods where the gypsies came each year, from Nellie Dunn’s sweet shop to Father Gunn’s church, the tenor of life in this small Irish town is placid, uneventful - some would say dull But peel away the layers and all sorts of unexpected things come to light.

Customer Reviews

The Copper Beach is yet another great story by bestselling Irish author Maeve Binchy, celebrated for her portrayal of loveable characters. This CD audiobook revolves around the lives of a group of people who carved their dreams into a copper beech tree when they left school. Binchy dips in and out of each of their lives to see who accomplished their dreams and who didn’t, as we witness some surprising outcomes.

The story follows Maura who suffers from a broken heart after marrying a barman who leaves her to raise their child with Down’s Syndrome alone - but is her luck about to change? Eddie Barton is conscious that he looks different to most people. However, his life is about to change when he finally meets the pen friend he fell in love with via letters but will she be the same person he envisioned her to be.

The crux of Niall’s story centres on his submissive personality while Vanessa is the complete opposite with her strong feminine charm that can be sometimes overbearing. We then skip to Leo who is desperate to find love, before we meet Foxy, who has worked hard since leaving school and goes on to work equally as hard to win Leo’s heart, but will she succeed?

These audiobooks on CD, also available in MP3 download format, allow the listener to dip in and out of the character’s lives, making them an essential addition to any Binchy fan’s library, or a perfect introduction to anyone new to her quintessentially Irish style of writing.
