Originally released as part of a series of plays originally broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and later adapted for the screen, Say Something Happened is a short play that follows a young social worker as she visits an elderly couple on what should be a routine visit.
Starring acting stalwarts Thora Hird, Hugh Lloyd and Julie Walters, this story deals engrossingly with the juxtaposition between old and new, and displays writer Alan Bennett’s talents at their best. What starts off as a normal house call turns into something rather more complex when it becomes apparent that young social worker June (Walters) was not anticipating what this visit has in store for her. The elderly couple appear disinclined to jump through the council’s hoops, presenting situations and revelations that June’s training did not prepare her for. By the end of the visit, June is left wondering whether or not she has actually achieved anything at all.
With a running time of 20 minutes, this engrossing and thought-provoking short story is an ideal addition to your BBC Drama collection, and is available from to download as an MP3 audiobook. It is also available in CD audiobook format as part of “Triple Bill”, the collection from which it is taken.
