Set in 1651 during the English Commonwealth, ‘The Royal Escape’ focuses on the 21 year old Charles II as he and his men struggle to set his kingdom free of Oliver Cromwell’s autocratic rule.
This commendably historically accurate novel is testament to Georgette Heyer’s extensive and meticulous research into every detail of the Battle of Worcester. When the outlawed King is forced to flee the great battle, he and his small party of men must travel discreetly through Cromwell’s repressive England so that they may reach France and save his realm. This is, of course, easier said than done. Beyond George II’s makeshift disguise as a common peasant, his distinctive looks and humorous manner are almost impossible not to recognise.
Heyer’s ability to breathe life and character into accurate historical fact is demonstrably evident in this fine literary achievement. ‘Royal Escape’ on CD audiobook takes you back in time to battle-torn England in an exciting narrative that bristles with real action, far more so than any account you may have read in a factual history book.
Read by the British actor, Cornelius Garrett, this title is also available to download as an MP3 audiobook, so you can join the outlawed King’s adventure in whichever audio format suits you best.
