Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury star in another intriguing case for BBC Radio's smoothest sleuth and his glamorous wife, Steve. For thirty years the fictional crime novelist and detective Paul Temple, together with his Fleet Street journalist wife Steve, solved case after case in one of BBC Radio's most popular series. They inhabited a sophisticated world of chilled cocktails and fast cars, a world where Sir Graham Forbes, of Scotland Yard, usually needed Paul's help with his latest tricky case.Whilst she and Paul are staying in the fishing village of Downburgh, Steve gets the uneasy feeling that she is being watched by a man at Fisherman's Point. A pleasant boat trip turns into a nightmare when their craft gets shot at - and the boatman himself is later discovered drowned at sea. Back in London, the daughter of the head of CI5 has disappeared, and Sir Graham brings the matter to Paul's attention. Could there be a connection between this and the events in Downburgh?

Review By Richard - Paul Temple and the Lawrence Affair

This brings together the great team of Peter Coke and Marjorie Westbury who, in my opinion, play the perfect Paul and Steve. The dynamics between the pair is wonderful and you would honestly think that they were husband and wife.

Paul and Steve obviously have great devotion to each other, but Paul often shows impatience with his devoted and long suffering wife, who if this were in current time would probably not stand for it and in this particular story he appears to be even less tolerant. This is really an example of the different era (and attitudes) to that in which we now live. Of course Paul and Steve live in a privileged sophisticated world of cocktails, fast cars, night clubs and with a ‘man’ looking after their every needs.

I particularly enjoyed this story which tells of a stranger who appears to be watching Steve whilst they are holidaying in a small fishing village. A boat trip turns into a nightmare when they get shot at. This triggers off a series of murders, which also involves the head of MI5’s daughter being missing. Is there a connection?

I would give this 5 out of 5 stars

Active StarActive StarActive StarActive StarActive Star Another Fun Detective Drama
Review By Graham - All of the original Paul Temple series sound delightfully quaint these days, with their glamorous London night clubs, exclusive cocktail parties and grand-sounding country houses, and a hero and heroine who solve complicated cases while sipping champagne, glugging brandy and whizzing back and forth between one shady location and the next in a succession of sporty motor cars. The magic is all in the interplay of characters, with Peter Coke as Temple and Marjorie Westbury as his wife Steve injecting so much charm and fun into their roles that every twist and turn in the tale is engrossing no matter how odd or illogical it might seem. In this particular story, an unusually tetchy Temple has to solve a mystery that involves several mysterious deaths, the disappearance of the daughter of the head of MI5 and numerous attempts by persons unknown to murder the fragrant Steve. With curious local characters such as 'Salty West' and plenty of cliff-hanging endings to episodes, this is tremendous stuff that keeps you entertained from start to finish. A must for radio nostalgists as well as lovers of classic detective dramas. (Posted on 12 December 2012)
