A brand new fully dramatised remake of the lost archive drama Paul Temple and Steve, starring Crawford Logan and Gerda StevensonFrom 1938 to 1968, crime novelist and detective Paul Temple and his Fleet Street journalist wife Steve solved case after case in one of BBC Radio's most popular serials. Now the dapper duo return refreshed and reinvigorated to the airwaves, to investigate the activities of a shadowy and ruthless criminal mastermind in post-war London.Enlisted by Sir Graham Forbes of Scotland Yard to help track down the mysterious Dr Belasco, Paul and Steve find clues in cigarette lighters and bodies in shrubberies, dance the night away in louche Latin American night clubs, meet sinister manservants and suspicious foreigners, and have their lives threatened at every turn. Just as well Steve remembered to bring along her revolver as well as her ration book...This new production for BBC Radio 4 uses the original scripts, vintage sound effects and much of the incidental music from the missing 1947 production. As far as possible, it is a technical and stylistic replica of how that production might have sounded had its recording survived.

Review By Graham - This is a BBC re-make of a series that was lost from the archives, but the new version has been recorded and performed with great care and attention to period detail - with even the microphones and sound effects dating back to the original era. This particular adventure sees Paul and his wife Steve become embroiled in the hunt for the mysterious Dr Belasco, a mysterious mafia-like figure who has been causing havoc all over London. With Temple working with Scotland Yard on the case, expect the usual range of glamorous nightclubs, dark country houses, car crashes, gun shots and bombs, all accompanied by generous servings of brandy and a succession of exotic cocktails. Well-acted and 'gay' in the old-fashioned way, this is a delightful eight-part detective drama that will engross and entertain from start to finish. Great fun! (Posted on 29 October 2012)

Review By Richard - Paul Temple and Steve - Audio Play

Crawford Logan and Gerda Stevenson are a perfect match as Paul Temple and Steve. All the acting is good and completely believable. Even though the series was made some time ago it does not sound too dated and some of the ‘old fashioned’ ideas are quite endearing, for example the gallantry of the men towards the women and the use of ration books.

I find the play being divided up into 8 twenty eight minute episodes very useful – enabling the listener to divide the listening time up into short spurts. The story is intricate which holds the interest throughout, with tension building up and a cliff hanger at the end of each episode, leaving the listener eager to start the next episode.

I would thoroughly recommend this and look forward to future ones – giving this a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. (Posted on 3 October 2012)
