Curious riddles, a beautiful princess, a devious bastard, a crazed beggar and an enraged king form the elements of one of the greatest tragedies in the history of English literature, written by William Shakespeare over five hundred years ago.
This complex tale begins innocently, when King Lear determines to divide Britain between his three daughters - Goneril, Regan and Cordelia - with the largest share on offer to the one who can convey she loves him best. Goneril and Regan both pledge their insincere love to him in farcical performances, whereas the virtuous Cordelia speaks the truth, conceding that no words can describe her love for him. Feeling betrayed by what he perceives to be an ungrateful lack of affection, King Lear acts upon his anger and rashly disowns his youngest daughter.
Meanwhile, the Earl of Gloucester makes a similar error when he disowns his moral son Edgar in belief of his illegitimate son’s phony account that he attacked him.
This tragic tale has been enjoyed by audiences for centuries for its magnificent complexities, political themes and its tumultuous battle between the forces of good and evil. Featuring a full-cast of distinguished actors, this unique dramatisation of King Lear is available to download on MP3 audiobook.
