This BBC Radio 4 dramatisation of Alan Bennett’s comedy-come-drama stage play Kafka’s Dick stars Richard Griffiths, Alison Steadman and Peter Woodthorpe. The acclaimed comedy has been described as being ‘brilliantly clever’ by The Times newspaper, and this CD audiobook version of the tale is a great buy for any Bennett fan.
The story begins with an introduction to Kafka devotee Sydney who is married to Linda. They are soon paid a visit by Kafka and his friend Max Brod, who had ignored instructions by his long-dead friend to burn his works upon his demise. The rather strange gathering of characters provide the basis of a great story. as we learn that Kafka desired anonymity in his death – something that Brod chose to ignore. We also find out that he had some serious issues with his father, and one secret in particular is threatening Kafka’s peace as it looks likely that his father will spill the beans and everyone will soon know what Kafka doesn’t want them to…
This CD or MP3 audiobook version is a great addition to any Bennett collection, and the intimacy of the audiobook gives it a canny edge over its printed version. The full star cast ensures that this is one Bennett story not to be missed.
