Review By FionaL - I can't think of anything better to listen to when you have a spare hour or so than a few William adventures. William is the imperturbable observer of the idiocies of the grown-ups in his world. To William there are 2 types of grown-up, the ones that give tips and the ones that don't and the Machiavellian lengths to which William will go to secure a tip are hilarious. No matter what sticky mess William gets into he usually lands on his feet. Even when he doesn't he accepts his downfall philosophically and like Ham, or was it Eggs or Bacon, calmly adapts himself to the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune. These are just some of the characteristics that make William so likeable (even if he is someone you wouldn't want to know in real life). You can't help feeling, like William, that life is for exploring, for playing Red Indians and Pirates and not for Latin, French and spelling. It doesn't matter how many William stories you listen to, you always want more. The only discordant note in the William stories is the soppy girls who gaze at William in admiration and say "I think you're wonderful William," but they're more than compensated for by the absolutely wonderful child terror Violet Elizabeth.
It is an absolute pleasure to listen to Martin Jarvis' narration of the stories. His characterisations are inspired and in wonderful contrast to his well modulated narrator tones. There's never any doubt of who is speaking in these stories. If you're only familiar with William on T.V. you will be delighted to discover that the written stories are even funnier and you too will be hooked. (Posted on 27 January 2013)
