Trapped in rural Steeple Bumpleigh, a man less stalwart than Bertie Wooster would probably give way at the knees. For among those present were Florence Craye, to whom Bertie had once been engaged; her new fiancé ‘Stilton’ Cheesewright, who sees Bertie as a snake in the grass; and that biggest blot on the landscape, Edwin the Boy Scout, who is busy doing acts of kindness out of sheer malevolence. All Bertie’s forebodings are fully justified. For in his efforts to oil the wheels of commerce, promote the course of true love and avoid the consequences of a vendetta, he becomes the prey of all and sundry. In fact only Jeeves can save him.

P.G. Wodehouse was born in 1881 and died in 1975 on St Valentine’s Day, only weeks after being knighted. He is most famous for the creation of Jeeves and Wooster, and many of his novels have been recorded as audiobooks, including ‘Thank You, Jeeves’; ‘Very Good, Jeeves’; ‘Blandings Castle’; ‘Ukridge’ and ‘The Code of the Woosters’.

Life is rather spiffing for Bertie Wooster when we meet him on this CD audiobook adaptation of Wodehouse’s Joy in the Morning. Spiffing, until he’s forced to organise secret meeting between Uncle Percy and his business partner. Pretending to rent Uncle Percy’s cottage in Steeple Bumpleigh as a cover, life becomes decidedly less-spiffing when he realises that an ex-fiancée, Florence Craye, lives in the village and still has him in her sights. Will Jeeves be able to palm her off and will he be able to get Uncle Percy to allow Boko to marry his daughter Nobby?

Wodehouse cranks up the speed and the laughs in this fast-paced and funny MP3 audiobook. Jonathan Cecil flexes his upper-crust muscles, lending his inimitably plummy tones to the narration. The characters are Justas eccentric and blithering as you might expect from a Wodehouse book, giving Cecil the chance to reassert his position as “the best upper-class-twit of his era.” Certainly, he makes the listening experience engaging and his voice alone is evocative of the time and the social class being fondly pilloried.

Joy in the Morning is a beautifully crafted romp, resplendent with twists and turns galore. However, Joy in the Morning is an equal joy in the evening, best enjoyed in your favourite chair with a little glass of something special.
