Jeeves is on holiday in Herne Bay, and while he’s away the world caves in on Bertie Wooster. For a start, he’s astonished to read in The Times of his engagement to the mercurial Bobbie Wickham. Then at Brinkley Court, his Aunt Dahlia’s establishment, he finds his awful former head master in attendance ready to award the prizes at Market Snodsbury Grammar School. And finally the Brinkley butler turns out, for reasons of his own, to be Bertie’s nemesis in disguise, the brain surgeon Sir Roderick Glossop.

With all occasions informing against him, Bertie has to hightail it to Herne Bay to liberate Jeeves from his shrimping net. And after that, the fun really starts.

Customer Reviews

With Jeeves away on his annual shrimping holiday, Bertie must face the trials and tribulations of life on his own. Putting his best foot forward, he goes to stay with his Aunt Dahlia at Brinkley Court. Unfortunately for Bertie, he hadn’t counted on the endless stream of guests that Aunt Dahlia seems to be entertaining, some of them faces from his past. There’s Bertie’s old schoolteacher Aubrey Upjohn, who ends up wearing a cup of tea, Bobbie Wickham who Bertie ends up accidentally engaged to and Wilbert Cream, who is suspected of stealing the antique cow-creamer. With other faces popping up and each with their own agenda, it’s not long before Bertie is wishing Jeeves back from Herne bay.

Ian Carmichael takes the reigns on this CD audiobook. An Englishman through and through, Carmichael has played Wooster several times on television, most notably in The World of Wooster. His comic timing and affinity with Wodehouse’s wit and wordplay are in fine form, as he breathes sliver-spooned life into each of the characters.

Wodehouse’s works translate perfectly into audiobooks on MP3 and CD, especially when delivered by an actor of Carmichael’s character. If you want to lose yourself in a world of whimsy, eccentricity and tightly-packed plots, then look no further.
