Philip Pirrip –or ‘Pip’ – has ‘great expectations’. An orphan, brought up in a small village on the Essex marshes by his sharp-tongued sister and her husband Joe Gargery, the gentle and kind-hearted village blacksmith, he receives from an anonymous benefactor the chance of escaping the forge. Pip’s expectations are fraught with difficulties as he passes from childhood to adulthood and discovers his true self. Around this core move a host of fine Dickensian characters – the unbearably smug Mr Pumblechook, Miss Haversham, deranged in her wedding dress, and the chillingly meticulous lawyer, Jaggers.

Customer Reviews

Great Expectations is considered by many to be Charles Dickens’ greatest work. It is a timeless tale of love and gratitude, greed and vengeance, set against the colourful backdrop of Dickens’ world and enriched by a cast of characters that are caring and hateful in equal measure. This adaptation is perfect for fans of Dickens or those who are new to his works.

Martin Jarvis, well-versed in the world of audiobooks, narrates this adaptation with his usual finesse. His vocal abilities infuse each of Dickens’ multi-layered characters with emotion and make them entirely credible. In particular, the way in which he portrays the changes in the lead character of Pip, from a naïve orphan with ‘great expectations’ of fame and fortune to a more worldly-wise adult is both moving and engaging. Other characters, such as the meticulous lawyer Jaggers, and the deranged Miss Haversham, give him free rein to test his skills without ever straying into the realms of caricature.

This edition is the full, unabridged version, weighing in at just over 17 hours in length. However, it is testament to both Jarvis and Dickens that the pace never drags, making this an exciting and insightful audiobook from start to finish.
