Ursula Moray Williams was born in 1911. She wrote her first children’s book, 'Jean Pierre', in 1931, and became a household name with the publication of 'The Little Wooden Horse' in 1938. Among her other well-known books are 'The Good Little Christmas Tree' (1942), 'Gobbolino the Witch’s Cat' (1943) and 'Grandma and the Ghowlies' (1986). She died in 2006, having written almost 70 books.

An accomplished stage actress, Gwen Watford’s many appearances included 'Abiding Passions', 'A Woman of No Importance' and 'The Cabinet Minister'. She was also a familiar face on TV; her credits included 'The Alien Corn', 'Relatively Speaking' and 'The Mirror Crack’d from Side to Side'. During her career she recorded numerous ‘Miss Read’ titles. Gwen Watford died in February 1994.
