James Bond is targeted for elimination by SMERSH, and the malevolent Colonel Rosa Klebb has set a trap in Istanbul. The bait is the Spektor decoding machine, to be delivered by the irresistible Tatiana Romanova. The assassin is Red Grant, a psychopath who has defected from the West. Bond and Tatiana become pawns in a game of cross and double-cross that reaches its deadly finale on the Orient Express. Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Toby Stephens.
This title is also available as part of the 007 Reloaded collection.
In From Russia With Love, Toby Stephens really captures the menace of Donovan ‘Red’ Grant, SMERSH’s chief executioner – ‘I’m an expert at killing people. I do it very well. I like it.’ When Stephens says those words, they’re chilling. He really sounds like he means them. Perhaps that’s not surprising really as he was a former Bond villain himself, having played Gustav Graves in Die Another Day.
Whether it’s the tenderness between Bond and Tatiana, or even the personality of May, (Bond’s endearing Scottish housekeeper), Stephens convincingly portrays the eclectic cast of characters - especially as From Russia With Love also features one of the most well known baddies in the Bond canon: Rosa Klebb, the Head of SMERSH’s Department of Torture and Death. Stephens’ vivid description of her is certainly memorable on this audiobook.
Stephens deftly succeeds in making this novel spine-tinglingly exciting as he increases the pace towards the breathless climax onboard the Orient Express.
From Russia With Love is famous for being one of President Kennedy’s ten favourite books.
And with Toby Stephens’ impressive reading, it’s easy to see why.
