Things take a turn for the worse however, when the headmaster realises the nature of the performance, which ends up mocking everything that he stands for. Primarily comedic whilst at times conjuring up an almost melancholic nostalgia for the past, Forty Years On was enormously well received on its stage début and has lost none of its charm since.
