The summer holidays are imminent and Miss Read is really looking forward to the rest and peace they offer. Things are not to be so simple, however. On the very first day of her holidays, she falls and breaks her arm, and her old friend Amy whisks her away to recuperate on the island of Crete.
The change of scene provides a welcome break and gives the two women time to take a long look at the merits of both single and married life. When the friends return to Fairacre, they find themselves refreshed and ready to approach the lives they think they know so well with a little new insight.
