Emma Woodhouse, motherless and mistress of her father’s home from an early age, is used to getting her own way. ‘Handsome, clever and rich’, she has every advantage. Employing her extensive charms, she sets about match-making among her friends and acquaintances, although her inadequacies in the art are a source of disappointment and mortification. These are revealed to her by her close neighbour, Mr Knightley, one of the few people who could see faults in Emma Woodhouse, and the only one who ever told her of them.

'Emma', by many considered the best English novel, can be read as a charming love story, a detective story, and a comic and lively picture of English life 200 years ago.

Review By Katie - A favourite of mine, this Jane Austen novel is also the one I like the best of all her novels. The plot twists and turns with unexpected outcomes, that is of course, unless you already know what happens (and with the many film and television adaptations about this becomes likely and although you might vaguely know what happens) there is nothing quite like the sweet experience of the original book. This version is so well read by Jenny Agutter too. All this makes for essential listening and it's definitely one for the library! (Posted on 8 May 2013)
