Quarshie uses his deep, rich voice to convincingly portray the many different American, English and Jamaican characters that that feature on this audiobook.
For example, there’s Quarrel – Bond’s ‘splendid companion’. Quarrel is a firm ally, but he can also sound cold and ruthless at times. He is certainly a splendid creation by Quarshie.
M’s outbursts and Bond’s anger at his chief are particularly effective too.
Combining Ian Fleming’s brilliantly descriptive writing and Hugh Quarshie’s evocative reading, the island of Jamaica becomes a character in its own right.
Dr No is a rollicking, escapist novel, which features a wonderful location. Dr No is an excellent villain: mad, ruthless, intellectual, sadistic. And there are also a few surprises: at times, Bond feels fear and freezes, and he even turns down a woman’s advances...
