M thinks he has an easy case for 007, just what he needs after a near-fatal brush with SMERSH. But on arriving in Jamaica to look for a missing agent and his secretary, Bond learns that the reclusive Dr Julius No could be connected with their disappearance. When Bond and the exotic Honeychile Rider are imprisoned on Dr No s private island, they realize that his plans could threaten international security. Includes an exclusive bonus interview with Hugh Quarshie.
This title is also available as part of the 007 Reloaded collection.
James Bond is on a routine assignment in Jamaica. There’s plenty of time to relax and soak up the sun as the palm trees wave and the calypsos throb. However, on the horizon lies Crab Key, Dr No’s island fortress. And Dr No’s prescription for Bond is to run a gauntlet - to the death.
Hugh Quarshie (Holby City’s Ric Griffin) reads this audiobook of Dr No and from the start you’ll become immersed in the Caribbean atmosphere.
Quarshie uses his deep, rich voice to convincingly portray the many different American, English and Jamaican characters that that feature on this audiobook.
For example, there’s Quarrel – Bond’s ‘splendid companion’. Quarrel is a firm ally, but he can also sound cold and ruthless at times. He is certainly a splendid creation by Quarshie.
M’s outbursts and Bond’s anger at his chief are particularly effective too.
Combining Ian Fleming’s brilliantly descriptive writing and Hugh Quarshie’s evocative reading, the island of Jamaica becomes a character in its own right.
Dr No is a rollicking, escapist novel, which features a wonderful location. Dr No is an excellent villain: mad, ruthless, intellectual, sadistic. And there are also a few surprises: at times, Bond feels fear and freezes, and he even turns down a woman’s advances...
Listen out for:
- the three blind men
- Bond swapping his ‘lady’s gun’ for a Walther PPK
- an unforgettable bed scene (no – not that kind!)
- Bond seeing Honeychile Rider for the first time
- a terrifying dragon breathing fire
- Dr No’s assault course
Dr No is the sixth James Bond title by Ian Fleming.
