While the BBC has announced its plans to digitally restore some Classic Who stories in line for the Time Lord’s 50th Anniversary, there are some that are beyond help. Warriors of the Deep is actually a great story, but hampered by the appearance of one of the worst monsters in Who history.
A sort of turtle-headed pantomime-horse, the Myrka is derided by fans of all ages. However, record the adventure as a CD audiobook and you’re free from the limitations of low-budget special-effects, leaving the story to shine.
The Fifth Doctor and his companions arrive on Earth in 2087, in the midst of a Cold War. Finding themselves on an undersea base, the Doctor spots a Silurian craft, up to something in the watery depths. It soon transpires that they are awakening their reptilian cousins, the Sea Devils and preparing for a twin-pronged assault on the planet. Unable to destroy Earth themselves, the Silurians force the crew of Seabase 4 to launch a nuclear strike to initiate a war. The Doctor must take drastic measures to stop them…
This CD audiobook comprises the original soundtrack from the TV broadcast with superb narration from Janet Fielding, who played the Doctor’s assistant, Tegan. Without the detraction of rubber-suited actors, this story reveals itself as an excellent piece of tense drama – a superb addition to any Who fan’s audiobook collection.
