Patrick Troughton plays the second Doctor in this classic six-part tale of 'bodysnatching' from 1967. The TARDIS makes a hazardous return to contemporary Earth - materialising at Gatwick Airport in the path of an oncoming aeroplane! The travellers split up in order to evade airport security, but in doing so they become embroiled in a plot to steal the personalities of young human beings. The Chameleons: faceless aliens who have lost their very identities following a disaster on their home world. Now they have infiltrated the airport, setting up the bogus Chameleon Tours in order to kidnap passengers and take over their very identities. As the Doctor and his companions become mixed up in the alien machinations, it soon becomes difficult for them to distinguish friends from enemies. This story, only two episodes of which survive in the television archive, marks the departure of companions Ben and Polly, played by Michael Craze and Anneke Wills, from the series. It also features Frazer Hines as Jamie and Pauline Collins as Samantha Briggs.

The remarkable thing about this six-part CD audiobook of Doctor Who’s adventures entitled The Faceless Ones is that it contains the only two surviving episodes from the BBC’s film archive for that period. Prior to the digital age, old stock film simply took up too much storage space and only the soundtracks of the remaining contemporary episodes survive the clearing out.

Still, this audiobook on CD provides a ripping yarn and gives an airing to Doctor Who Mark II in the person of actor Patrick Troughton, who portrays the Doctor in a more serious manner than many of the later portrayals, adding an edge of real threat and danger to the storytelling.

In this tale, our TARDIS police box lands on a runway in the path of an incoming plane, with our time-travelling team splitting up to get past airport security. In doing so, they happen upon a plot by aliens to assume human identities, something which airport security could perhaps try doing? Anyway, things become increasingly difficult as identities get taken over, making enemy detection tricky

Apart from Troughton’s immaculate tones, the remastered voices of Michael Craze and Anneke Wills, along with Frazer Hines and Pauline Collins, provide the Doctor with his customary companions.
