Shoreditch, London, 1963. The Beatles have beaten John Smith and the Common Men to No. 1. Satellites are being launched into outer space whilst on Earth a master thief is stealing some highly specialised equipment. In the streets and bombsites around Totter's Lane, the normally placid teenagers of Coal Hill are running riot: searching out the different and hunting down the alien. Schoolgirl Susan Foreman just wants an easy life for herself and her grandfather, the mysterious Doctor. She wants to be liked and accepted by Cedric and all the other pupils at Coal Hill School. But Susan has been inadvertently drawing attention to herself. The hunt is on - and Susan and her grandfather are the quarry. Celebrating 50 years of Doctor Who, this is a brand new adventure for the First Doctor. Carole Ann Ford - Susan in the original BBC TV series - and Tam Williams perform this original story by Nigel Robinson, with music and sound design.

Review By Craig - An intriguing story, set before the tv series begins. Wonderfully read. Atmospheric sound and evocative kisses to the past. Sets things up nicely for this birthday audio series. (Posted on 7 February 2013)

Review By Peter - London, October, 1963, and a mysterious figure lurks in the shadows. Suddenly, two motorbikes race past, briefly illuminating the figure: it is the Doctor, or more accurately, THE Doctor. For this is no return to a place and time visited many times since we first met the Doctor, but a visit to a time in the Doctor's life BEFORE we first met him...

Narrated primarily by Carole Ann Ford, with help from Tam Williams, this is a story that needs to achieve a great deal: it is the first of a series designed to celebrate the Doctor's 50th birthday, it needs to set the scene appropriately, giving a flavour of the past, with enough to draw in the newcomers, and it needs to work as a casual tale that can be picked up as a standalone, for the casual buyer.
Does it achieve all this? The answer has to be a resounding YES! And more besides!
It captures the mood of the very first story perfectly, characters, places and events coming to life so vividly that you begin to feel you seen the story sometime in the past and are remembering forgotten moments. But this is just the flavour, the story itself manages to be old and new at the same time, a measured, layered and NEW adventure for the Doctor and Susan, flashing black and white images into the mind's eye.
If you are a newcomer to the series, this works well as a story in its own right, but it will hopefully make you keen to find out more about these fascinating characters; but for those of us long enough in the tooth to have seen the first Doctor on repeated viewings, this story fits perfectly into the history and continuity of the TV series.

If this is an example of the quality we can expect from this series, then I look forward impatiently for the remainder. I knew we'd be on pretty safe ground with Big Finish Productions making this for AudioGO, but I hadn't expected it to be quite THIS GOOD. Could we have been invited to listen to the beginning of a beautiful friendship? (Posted on 5 February 2013)

Review By DHarrison - Big Finish have done a stunning job with the sound design on this release, it engrosses you from the very start. For fans, like myself, of the Companion Chronicle format used for several years by BF, the third person narration might seem a tad out of the ordinary, but it does the story no harm. Carole Ann Ford is a great lead voice, and Tam Williams breezes through his guest performance with consumate ease. The story has a lovely slow build-up, very reminiscent of the era, but I would say the resolution is not quite as strong as the earlier part of the tale. It's by no means disappointing, but it doesn't quite sustain it's quickening momentum.
There's also a couple of very interesting teasers for the rest of the range - but I shan't spoilt them here. A good story, well told, and a worthy celebration of the show for it's golden anniversary. (Posted on 1 February 2013)
