Every generation of Who fans will have their own favourite monsters and, for fans of a certain age, the Sea Devils are at the top of the list. Although they have only been battled by the Third Doctor, the Sea Devils are still remembered so fondly that they frequently top the ‘monsters we’d like to see in the new series’ polls – and the CD audiobook reveals the story that introduced them.
The story itself is a very simple one: the Sea Devils awaken from their sleep and decide it’s time to reclaim the Earth from themselves. However, what makes this MP3 audiobook so special is the relationship between the Doctor and the Master; we learn more about their entwined pasts than we have done before: we discover that they had once bee friends, that the Doctor spoke out at his trial in a bid to prevent his execution and that the Doctor believes he can change. In fact, the story is so well-written that you find yourself wanting the Master to change – and when you hear his familiar, resonant chuckle; you hate him all the more for not doing so.
Geoffrey Beevers, who played a later incarnation of the Master, takes the narrative helm and obviously relishes his chance to revisit the character. While the Sea Devils are the centre of the story, it’s the Holmes/Moriarty chemistry between the two Time Lords that really captures your attention. A brilliant tale for New Who fans who want to find out more about their favourite Gallifreyan and for old-school Whovians who want to travel back in time to the days of four-parters and cliff-hanger endings.
