Sarah Jane Smith and the Brigadier are waiting anxiously for the Doctor to complete his regeneration, when metallic monster goes on the rampage through the Ministry of Defence. As the Doctor lies unconscious, Sarah Jane is told that secret plans for a disintegrator gun have been stolen. Before anyone can act, another facility is broken into, and it quickly becomes apparent that the lethal gun is being constructed.

Journalistic instinct leads Sarah Jane to the National Institute for Advanced Scientific Research. Here she makes friends with a robot, K1, and uncovers a secret society bent on world domination. But the when Doctor talks to the robot’s maker he learns the robot had been dismantled. In a race against time can the Doctor save mankind from the evil cabal, and is the robot really just a mindless puppet for the rogue scientists, or will it ultimately resist it’s programming?
