The Daleks are now one of the most iconic aliens in sci fi history and the Whoniverse would be a poorer place without them. This CD audiobook charts the Doctor’s very first encounter with the psychotic pepper pots, complete with new sound effects and suitably unsettling incidental music.
The Doctor’s first incarnation travels to a seemingly-dead planet. While his companions want to move on, the Doctor sabotages the Tardis, so they have no option but to investigate. They make their way to a nearby metallic city, only for the Doctor’s crew to begin suffering the effects of radiation-sickness. Things get worse when the time-travellers are captured by a race of metal-shod mutants, known as the Daleks. And why are these grater-voiced monstrosities so keen to let Susan get back to the Tardis..?
William Russell, who played Ian Chesterton in the BBC TV adventure, narrates this superbly realised MP3 audiobook. He pitches is interpretation of William Hartnell’s Doctor perfectly, allowing us to see the humanity masked by the layers of crabbiness and self-servitude. And Dalek fans won’t be disappointed; that familiar, metallic bark is present from the moment the diabolical dustbins take the stage. Probably best listened to from behind the safety of the sofa. Or sitting at the top of the stairs - Daleks can’t climb stairs.
