At last, fans of Doctor Who get to find out more about Paul McGann’s Doctor. The Eighth Doctor was only seen on our screens for an hour and a half, yet has found his place in the Whoniverse, thanks to the Big Finish audiobooks for CD and audiobooks for MP3.
The Chimes of Midnight, written by Robert Shearman, sees the Doctor and Charley arrive at an Edwardian house at Christmas, in 1906. But it everything as it appears to be? In fact, the house is a trap, existing outside of time itself and each time the grandfather clock strikes midnight, someone is doomed to meet their grisly end. But, as ever for the Doctor, it’s infinitely more complicated than just finding out whodunnit.
McGann throws himself into the role of the titular Time Lord with his usual grace and dexterity. This Doctor is a more carefree spirit than any of his previous incarnations; rather than looking for adventure, he prefers to go where the winds of chance take him. Charley, played by India Fisher, is the perfect foil to McGann’s beatnik Gallifreyan, taking command where necessary and often finding her Doctor’s whimsical nature quite frustrating. For anyone who wants to delve deeper into the persona of the ‘missing Doctor’, this CD audiobook is the perfect portal.
