Hallowe'en 1938. A year after a mysterious meteorite lit up the skies of New York state, Martian invaders laid waste to the nation. At least, according to soon-to-be infamous Orson Welles they did. On October 30^th, 1938, Columbia Broadcasting System aired Orson Welles’ The War Of The Worlds, a series of simulated bulletins that left the city of Manhattan in a frenzy, believing that there was a real alien attack transpiring.

The story takes on new significance in Invaders From Mars when, after attempting to travel to the year 1930, the Doctor overshoots slightly and arrives in New York with Charley. Stumbling upon a dead private detective, the time-travelling duo are soon caught up in a sinister plot involving a Russian scientist, a disfigured mobster, a suspicious Fifth Columnist and Orson Welles himself.

As events take a turn far stranger than fiction, it becomes increasingly apparent that the Halloween broadcast of The War Of The Worlds may in fact have been a very real account of a devastating alien invasion.
