The most mysterious of all the Doctors, the Eighth Doctor is back with his loyal assistant Charley by his side. Paul McGann’s Doctor might have had the shortest screen tenure of the entire franchise, but the many adventures he’s had on audiobooks for CD are building up a portrait of one of the most interesting incarnations of the titular Time Lord.
In this MP3 audiobook, the Doctor and Charley decide to head to Venice for a well-earned rest. However, true to form, the Doctor gets the co-ordinates just a little bit wrong – by about 600 years. Instead of enjoying the sights and sounds of the Renaissance, the time travellers discover a cursed city about to sink into the watery depths and a Duke who hasn’t aged for over a century. Add a cult leader, an art-obsessed curator and some web-footed gondoliers into the mix and you’ve got all the hallmarks of a classic Doctor Who adventure.
McGann’s Doctor is the one incarnation that fans seem to hunger for and when you hear his rendition, it’s easy to see why. Byronic and blundering in equal measures, the Eighth Doctor isn’t as whimsical as his later incarnations, nor is he as irascible as some of previous ones; this Doctor is more alien, yet somehow more human than any of the others. Set your time-stabilisers, make yourself a nice cup of tea and enjoy.
