The much-maligned character of the Seventh Doctor has been given new life and flourished under the wings of Big Finish’s audiobooks for CD and audiobooks for MP3. If you’re expecting the spoon-playing, ball-juggling clown from the 1990s, then be prepared for a surprise; Sylvester McCoy’s rendition of the Doctor is a far more complex and often-darker affair.
Written by Paul Cornell, this adventure finds the Doctor and Ace, played with gusto by Sophie Aldred, at the apparently domestic setting of the Pinehill Crest Hotel in Kent. However, behind the hotel doors, three unusual events are being hosted: a cross-stitch convention, a time travel experiment and the summoning of the Scourge. When the Doctor and Ace find themselves confronted with a dead body that comes back to life, an ancient symbol that has the power of possession and a threat from another universe, the Doctor’s forced to admit that he might be running out of tricks.
Sylvester McCoy is a revelation, giving us the Doctor we all knew he was capable of, but were never allowed to see. A chance to reinvestigate the Seventh Doctor, this CD audiobook is a must for fans of the show and features brilliant performances by its two lead actors.
