The Sixth Doctor is back in bold, brash form. Played by Colin Baker, his Doctor – perhaps beyond all the others – has evolved over time to offer us a Time Lord that is multi-layered. Whilst he is certainly recognisable as the Doctor from the 1980s the rough edges are starting to smooth, revealing a softer side to his nature.
In this MP3 audiobook adventure written by Stephen Cole, the Doctor and Evelyn Smythe are at an intergalactic conference between some major temporal powers. However, he discovers that one of his old companions and fellow Gallifreyan Romana has been kidnapped and missing for the last 20 years. As his investigations unfold, some old foes return to the fore, with a weapon that threatens not only the Time Lords, but the entire galaxy…
While it’s always wonderful to hear Colin Baker step back into his multi-coloured spats, what’s really arresting is to hear the interplay between his Doctor and Romana. Lalla Ward reprises her role as one of the Doctor’s best-loved companions, capturing all her character’s playful haughtiness with ease. Romana was a companion of the Fourth Doctor, so it’s fascinating to hear how she gets on with his more colourful, less tolerant incarnation.
The adventure itself is a winner, featuring one of the Doctor’s most famous arch enemies, and the whole rip-roaring adventure creates a CD audiobook for fans of all ages.
