Douglas Kelly stars as ‘Dick Barton – Special Agent’ in another thrilling adventure for radio’s greatest hero.Heralded by an instantly memorable signature tune, the adventures of special agent Dick Barton and his friends Jock and Snowey, originally ran on the BBC Light Programme between 1946 and 1951. Set in an exciting world of criminal masterminds, espionage and adventure, the series was essential listening for an entire generation.Sadly very few of the BBC’s original recordings still survive. However, in 1949 a number of early Barton tales were re-recorded for transmission overseas. Starring Douglas Kelly, these re-stagings found new audiences in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Over 300 of these ‘international’ recordings were rediscovered in the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in 2009 and allow listeners finally to relive the escapades of the great Dick Barton. In the first story of the second radio series, Barton is on the trail of Tony Patelli, a criminal mastermind who has stolen a lorry-load of gold bullion. Can Barton save a kidnapped girl from Patelli’s clutches? Can he defeat the Vulture?Find out in this next exciting instalment of ‘Dick Barton – Special Agent!’

Review By Richard - I am fortunate enough to have "Dick Barton - Special Agent" in my collection, so this, the first story of the second radio series, was a must to get.

In this tale, Barton is on the trail of a criminal mastermind who has stolen a lorry-load of gold bullion. BUT.......can the kidnapped girl be saved from the criminal's clutches? Can the Vulture be defeated?

By today's "values" this seems like 'old-hat' story telling. But anyone who has fond memories of 40s/50s radio thrillers OR anyone who has a love for the golden era storytelling where one can lean back in the armchair, close one's eyes and be taken into a world of thrills, spills and, on occasion, kills, then this is an absolute must.

I listened to it all the way through (over 3 1/2 hours) the day it arrived - give it a couple of weeks and I'll be listening again.

The quality of the recording is up to AudioGO's usual high standard and the whole thing is highly recommended.

I would give it 6 stars out of 5 if that were possible (Posted on 24 September 2012)
