Douglas Kelly stars in another adventure for radio's greatest hero. Heralded by an instantly memorable signature tune, the adventures of Dick Barton, Jock and Snowey originally ran on the BBC Light Programme between 1946 and 1951. Very few of the BBC's original recordings still survive, however, in 1949 some were re-recorded for transmission overseas. Starring Douglas Kelly, these re-stagings found new audiences in Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Over 300 of these 'international' recordings were rediscovered in the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia in 2009 and allow listeners finally to relive the escapades of the great Dick Barton. In this exciting story, an old army friend of Dick Barton needs help to crack a gang of Oriental counterfeiters. Dick Barton and the Li Chang MysteryFor lovers of old time radio this 4 CD dramatization offers a real treat. The immediately recognisable signature tune splits the recording into manageable sections making this nearly four hour broadcast easy listening.
It is important to point out that as these recordings were made in the 1940’s (pre the politically correct era) they are not only dated regarding the acting style, but also some of the content these days could be construed as somewhat sexist and racist.
However, if, like me, you are an avid aficionado of post war radio, you'll ignore all of that and thoroughly enjoy another riveting story -:- Joe Crowther, who's an old army friend of Dick Barton, needs help to crack a gang of Oriental counterfeiters. Can Barton and his friends stop the Li-Chang's spread of forged currency? Car chases, big explosions - the whole kit and caboodle - all divided up into 16 x 15 minute episodes (4 per CD). Terrific escapism and 5 thoroughly deserved stars.
