Though Sally Jupp came from the village home for unmarried mothers, she seemed the ideal girl to help Mrs Maxie run a large house and look after her invalid husband. But the real Sally, pretty, ambitious and clever, was very different from the docile, repentant character she seemed to be. Murder shattered the tranquillity of her new home and Chief Detective Inspector Adam Dalgliesh arrived in the peace of a country Sunday to investigate the killing of a character as mysterious as Sally herself...

P.D. James, OBE, has won many awards for crime writing in Britain, America, Italy and Scandinavia, including the Mystery Writers of America Grandmaster Award and the National Arts Club Medal of Honor for Literature (USA). She received the Diamond Dagger from the Crime Writers’ Association, and was created a Life Peer. In 1997 she was elected President of the Society of Authors.

Roy Marsden has had a distinguished theatrical career, but he is probably best known on TV as P.D. James’s Adam Dalgliesh. Other credits include 'The Green Green Grass', 'The Palace', 'Rebus', 'Doctor Who', 'Foyle’s War' and 'Margaret' (as Norman Tebbit). Stage performances include 'Happy Jack' and 'Macbeth at the Gates'.

Customer Reviews

If you have a thirst for mysteries and intrigue, then check out the audiobook for CD adaptation of Cover Her Face, PD James’ first published novel. James introduces us to the character that would make her a household name, Inspector Dalgliesh, through the murder of an unmarried mother, Sally Jupp. While all the clues seem to point to one particular person, no-one can believe it possible.

Although this is the first Dalgliesh novel, it is testament to James’ abilities as an author that he arrives with his own history and views; Dalgliesh feel like an ongoing character that could have stepped out of another story. Set in 1962, Cover Her Face is both a gripping murder-mystery and a trip back in time to  the social difficulties of the day; Sally Jupp is regarded with some suspicion, given her marital status and it takes all Dalgliesh’s powers of persuasion before anyone comes to regard her with equality. We’re also privy to the issues that will haunt the Inspector through his life and determine his compassionate approach to investigation, most notably the death of his wife and child.

Fans of Dalgliesh are in for a real treat, as the audiobook for CD is read and narrated by Roy Marsden. For many, Marsden is the definitive Dalgliesh, conveying his cool detachment, whilst hinting at the problems of the man behind the badge. Those who are new to James’ stories will be transported to a world where nothing is as it seems and where there are often more questions than answers.
