The Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust is Gerald Durrell’s dream come true. At the age of six he told his mother that he intended to start a zoo. Here he celebrates his zoo’s 25th and the Trust’s 21st anniversaries with his famous mix of wit and gravitas.Describing travels made across the world to save creatures from extinction while increasing awareness of the rare and exotic animals at the Trust, Durrell’s Noah-like experiences are both thought provoking and highly entertaining.

Review By John - This is an excellent reading of an excellent book. Nigel Davenport has an ideal voice for this, crisp and very fitting for the image I have of Durrell. The anecdotes unfold with enthusiasm, wit and polish, interspersed with brief treatises on conservation, zookeeping and the idiocies of bureaucracy that so often confound the best intentions. Animals and humans alike are painted in vivid and captivating style. Though there is plenty of difficulty and Durrell does not hesitate to reveal the dispiriting and enraging aspects of his life's work, even so he remains passionate and avoids sinking into bitterness. He's also equally willing to turn the spotlight on himself and show his own embarrassments, as well as the joy of every success and a general joie de vivre.

The reading is clear, characterful and imbues the characters and events with individuality and colour. Davenport seems to settle easily into the role of Durrell, and I found this a very easy book to listen to, as well as an excellent one. I've already bought another one ("The Bafut Beagles").
